There is a strong argument for this approach. When launching a hardware or IoT product, committing $50,000 to $200,000 in custom injection mold tooling (such as steel P20 or NAK80 molds) before validating customer demand introduces massive financial risk. Generic enclosures from suppliers like Hammond Manufacturing or Bud Industries allow teams to validate core electrical engineering and software functionality with near-zero upfront tooling cost. If the market rejects the product concept, the capital loss is contained.

However, in my experience, relying on generic physical design past the initial prototype stage tends to suppress purchase conversion at the point of sale.

My read is that buyers evaluate physical hardware through subtle visual cues before they ever interact with the software or functional feature set. When a product utilizes generic enclosure geometry, it loses key visual affordances and visual density cues. When a physical product visually mirrors cheap commodity hardware available on broad marketplaces, potential buyers default to evaluating the product purely on price rather than value.
